Hello, we reached out to the manufacturer for their assistance on answering this questions. Per Eemax, "the only real danger to an Eemax unit besides freezing is water quality - if they have ‘bad’ water ( ie hard water) it will cause the element to wear out quicker. If they are not on city water I suggest determining water quality and type and perhaps put a filter prior to the heater".
